Send to Kindle update now supports ePub; removes .Mobi support

ePub is one of the most popular ebook file formats used to date, primarily because it’s more widely accepted across multiple devices and platforms. Kindle users however are probably more familiar with .Mobi files since ePub wasn’t readable on Kindle devices previously. Amazon’s recent announcement that they will now support ePub file formats on Kindle devices is exciting news for a lot of ebook readers out there, but what does this mean for the old .Mobi formats?

Begining in 2023, Kindle will no longer support adding .Mobi files but current files already in your Kindle library will continue to work as usual. For most users this will basically mean carry on as usual, but if you utilize the Send to Kindle feature on either the desktop or IOS platforms, you will need to re-download or convert those documents to a supported file format moving forward.

It’s important to note that the Send to Kindle feature is separate from downloading purchased books through the Kindle store directly. These changes apply to the Send to Kindle process only.

So what now?

As mentioned previously, if you have older .Mobi files already uploaded to your Kindle library than you’re good to go. You will still be able to view those documents as usual. If you want to send files to your library after 2023 however, you will need to use another format such as PDF or ePub. Learn more about sending documents to your Kindle library here.
