Synopsis

In the year 2045, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines, puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. When Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.

Our Review

I’ll start by stating that I didn’t actually ready the book; I listened to the audio book during my 3 hours of a commute each day. The audio book was narrated by Wil Wheaton, and I feel he did a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life! I have listened to many audio books where the book itself was good but the narration kinda hurt the experience, this is not one of those books. Do not be afraid to let this one be your first, or next, audio book experience if you haven’t read it yet.

The story is full of nostalgic references from when I was growing up and it was great reliving some of those moments through the events here. Cline did a good job bringing the past present and future all together in a way that simply worked. The story brings in some current technology and ties it in with things not yet available, and places it all together with little bits of history from the late 20th century.

The main characters in the book sort of become your friends as you go along and you can’t help but root for them as the story progresses. The challenges presented to the main character are realistic, within the scope of the story, and the things he did to overcome them were not all predictable, but were absolutely believable, both in the scope of the plot and with the personality of the character.

Though the main plot point of the ending may be predictable and expected, this story might have hurt badly if it would have gone a different way. Don’t get me wrong, there are surprises waiting at the end as well as throughout the entire story.

You might be thinking: “I’ve seen the movie, I don’t really need to read the book.” However, you would be wrong! The movie was a great adaptation, but it was just that, an adaptation. It is not the same story, the same events, or even the same total outcome. The movie did a good job keeping the main points of the story intact, but it did change so much of the story that I felt we only got to experience a very small amount of the original plot. Even if you have seen the movie, read the book.

P.S. Rumor has it that Cline is working on a follow on book, or a book two if you will, but the title, release date, and any other detail is not yet available.. and I will tell you that I intend to experience that continuation once it becomes available!
