Synopsis

Such wonderful children. Such a beautiful mother. Such a lovely house. Such endless terror!
It wasn't that she didn't love her children. She did. But there was a fortune at stake—a fortune that would assure their later happiness if she could keep the children a secret from her dying father.
So she and her mother hid her darlings away in an unused attic.
Just for a little while.
But the brutal days swelled into agonizing years. Now Cathy, Chris, and the twins wait in their cramped and helpless world, stirred by adult dreams, adult desires, served a meager sustenance by an angry, superstitious grandmother who knows that the Devil works in dark and devious ways. Sometimes he sends children to do his work—children who—one by one—must be destroyed....
'Way upstairs there are four secrets hidden. Blond, beautiful, innocent struggling to stay alive.

Our Review

Gosh this book brings me back to my childhood days! I remember reading this in Middle School, and then re-read it again as an adult. It’s still just as dark and twisted as I remember it being.  The Dollanganger series is my favorite of Andrews, with the exception of “My Sweet Audrina“, which is another favorite of mine. I find that some of her work is better than others but I still enjoy the twists and turns, strangeness and mystery that continues to captivate my interest.

This gothic tale isn’t for the lighthearted though. It consists of abuse, imprisonment and incest and may be unsuitable for some readers.

This is the only complete series that Andrews wrote herself before she passed away.  Ghostwriter, Andrew Neiderman later continued her legacy and continued publishing books under her name.

The first 2 books of Casteel series was written by Andrews herself as well, while the final 3 were finished by Neiderman. He still continues to write many other series as Andrew’s ghostwriter today.

The Dollanganger series will definitely remain a part of my library collection.
